This is the homepage for the project Auxiliary Selection in the History of English, which was carried out at the Institute for English Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart between June, 2004 and June 2007. We investigated the conditions on the variation between have and be as auxiliaries with the perfect in earlier stages of English as well as the changes that led to the loss of be in this function. The project was funded by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and is part of a larger project on the "Basis and boundaries of unaccusativity".
